This week my second father died of cancer and has allowed me to think about what it means to create one’s life in the image of God. He lived his life as if yesterday were done and that today could be done in such a way to bring joy to his and other’s future. He was the type of person that shined so bright that you couldn’t be in his presence without going through his personality. There are many other ways to shine, but his shining always attracted me to his leadership and love.

India.Arie

India.Arie released ‘I am light’ in 2013. She said that the album which contained this song was ‘made to be listened to in a quiet time, prayer, meditation, Yoga. My wish is that these songs bring softness, clarity, calm, and inspiration.’ I think her words are prophetic in their clarity about how we can live today under the joy of the light we can bring to ourselves and others.

The words are fantastic, but they are so much more impactful when you listen to them. In her poem, she does a tremendous job declaring that our lives are not caused. Our surroundings can affect us, but our free will says that we can become more by our choice. We are empowered by the light of God in us but not forced by it. With the light and love of God, we can create a new future caused by our free will.
